Razer made waves during the COVID-19 pandemic by selling RGB-lit N95 masks. Research on the masks named Zephyr has been completed. Accordingly, it was determined that the masks did not have N95 protection. Razer was fined 1.1 million dollars to pay customers.
Razer will pay 1.1 million dollars for the Zephyr mask
According to the fine announced by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Razer had claimed that its RGB-lit Zephyr mask used N95-grade filters. However, the FTC found that Razer received no certification to support this health claim. This means that the masks have not been tested.
N95 masks are known to filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles when properly fitted. However, the FTC could not confirm that the Zephyr masks met the N95 standard. They have not been tested by official health organizations such as the FDA or NIOSH.
Some YouTube channels also examined the mask when it went on sale. YouTubers who tore apart the Zephyr mask found that there was no certification. Razer then made sales by removing any mention of the N95 certification.
In the latest case, Razer was fined 1.1 million dollars. The company was required to refund anyone who purchased the Zephyr mask. The company was also fined $100,000.
FTC officials also stated that they will follow Razer for their wrong attitude towards N95 certification during the pandemic. The agency will hold the company responsible for health-related misrepresentations during the pandemic. Razer also announced a mask called the Zephyr Pro, but it was never released.
